I've found abnormal disk activity, even when the box was supposedly
not doing anything. I've a kernel built with:

  CONFIG_PREEMPT=y
  CONFIG_PREEMPT_BKL=y

Can you check if stopping the KDED Media Manager in:

  Control Center -> KDE Components -> Service Manager

makes any difference (it made for me)? It may help narrow down where
the problem comes from, and if your issue is similar to mine.
