This now works after wrestling with my router - it has a bug where it gets stuck in AP isolation mode so wireless connections cannot see each other! Trying to pair between a laptop connected with a wired connection and a phone connected through wireless does not work, but after fiddling with the router so that both devices can see each other when connected by wifi, the kdeconnect app on the phone was able to see the laptop and connect as expected.
