Package: ipw2100-source
Version: 1.1.3-1
Severity: important

Hello,

cc:ing to the ipw2100 mailing-list as it's a *big* problem.

On Debian stock kernel 2.6.14-1-686 (which includes ieee80211 and
ipw2100 compiled as modules), ipw2100-1.1.3 can be compiled as an
external module via module-assistant (log included) and is installable
with patch at bug #337920. But it cannot be inserted and dmesg returns
this error:
=====
ipw2100: Unknown symbol ieee80211_wx_get_encodeext
ipw2100: Unknown symbol ieee80211_wx_set_encodeext
=====

In fact, the module-assisant buildlog shows that as a warning:
=====
*** Warning: "ieee80211_wx_get_encodeext" \
 [/home/luca/src/modules/ipw2100/driver/ipw2100.ko] undefined!
*** Warning: "ieee80211_wx_set_encodeext" \
 [/home/luca/src/modules/ipw2100/driver/ipw2100.ko] undefined!
=====

From the INSTALL file included in the ipw2100 original tarball:
=====
5.  KERNEL REQUIREMENTS - Configuration
-----------------------------------------------
[...]
In addition, kernel versions 2.6.14 and later are providing *old*
ieee80211 and ipw2100 1.0 drivers as part of the mainline tree. If
these are compiled into your kernel (i.e. not as modules, but as
built-in), you will need to re-configure (using n to exclude/disable
ieee80211 and ipw2100) and rebuild your kernel before proceeding with
your ipw2100 upgrade.  See below.
[...]

NOTE: If ipw2100 is supported as a module (this would show up as
#define CONFIG_IPW2100_MODULE 1), you do not need to rebuild your
kernel, but you will need to remove the binary module and relevant
include files (see UPGRADING FROM PRIOR VERSIONS, below).
=====

AFAIK there's no solution to this problem: manually removing the
binary modules provided by the Debian stock kernel _is_ not a
solution for a general Debian user.

Thx, bye,
Gismo / Luca
