zeroconf can be tuned to emulate Windows (incorrect) behaviour by
modifying /etc/default/zeroconf and uncommenting the FALLBACK=yes line.

However, more interesting to me is that you say that your network is
'screwed'.  Could you send me the output of 'ip addr' and indicate what
you are expecting to see?
