We were trying to upload a 100MB file using sftp but proftpd kept crashing.
I upgraded the software using the version currently in testing (1.3.5~rc3) and
the problem has gone away.

I think that I was hit by http://bugs.proftpd.org/show_bug.cgi?id=3743 which is
solved in 1.3.4b or changing 2 lines in the sources
(http://bugs.proftpd.org/attachment.cgi?id=3730)
