What I did: * Installed debian 7.3 with XFCE desktop * Installed emacs * Started emacs from the command line Outcome: Emacs failed with message "Font `Bitstream Vera Sans Mono 12' is not defined" I resolved the bug by installing package ttf-bitstream-vera .
