thank you for packaging ekiga.
Now that Debian runs a SIP service[1], it would be nice if softphones in
Debian could easily connect to it. I did a client review today, and as
far as I could tell ekiga cannot connect to the Debian SIP server
because it doesn't support TLS.
If that is correct, can you please add a note to README.Debian
mentioning that ekiga cannot be used for this, and perhaps recommend an
equivalent alternative?

You are right, ekiga does not have support for TLS yet. I mentioned it
in README.Debian file, thanks.
