Usually I start my programs from the terminal. If I start zyGrib it creates and 
leaves subfulders like:

    └── share
        └── zygrib
            └── data
                └── config
                    ├── zygrib.ini
                    └── zygrib_poi.ini

The ~/.zygrib exists and is used.
