This may be a nautilus bug rather than gnome-control-center. Please re-assign there if so. When I toggle org.gnome.desktop.background:show-desktop-icons, when it is set to true my desktop background changes from my current default (solid black) to solid white. Turning this setting back to false restores the expected background.
