Quick update for anyone tracking this bug.
A back port of python lxml 3.3.1 and cssselect 0.9.1 is currently under
testing. Assuming no issues are found it should be making its way into
Wheezy back ports along with an updated calibre package soon.
That will resolve the conversion bug as well as enabling the book editor
feature to work which depends on a newer lxml version.
