The S/MIME signed emails that Mutt generates do not validate with Icedove (under Debian) or Thunderbird under OS X. (These are the only tests I've done.) Icedove simply states the the digital signature is not valid and that the message has been modified in transport. The signatures do verify with mutt itself (obviously) and with Maill.app under OS X. I am able to construct a signed message with openssl directly and send it using the mail command and Icedove/Thunderbird works. So it is not a generic problem with the certificate or with how it is stored on my computer. Signed messages created in Icedove with this certificate also work. The certificate is just a free one from Comodo. (I realise that the problem could lie with either Mutt or Icedove. I haven't submitted a bug report to Icedove and there isn't something similar existing in that package either.)
