The error appears to be somewhere outside the make output you quoted.
Could you send the complete build log to this bug?

Your best bet is really to use the etch/sid package (see below for 
why I think so). The etch/sid package will continue to work/be
installable on sarge systems for some time. I'm considering to provide
backports of the package if the need should arise to change
(build-)dependencies to something not in sarge.

The problem is, even if we find a way to fix the build for newer
kernels while keeping it working for the older sarge kernels, there is 
a very low probability that the required changes could make it into a
sarge update. And it is non-trivial to track 2.6 kernels from an
external-module perspective, so I think this is a lost cause.
