I can confirm the package builds fine in an up-to-date pbuilder chroot after changing the Build-Depends as indicated above, and it also seems to run just fine. As the new xboard maintainer I'd love to see gnuchess RC-bug-free, so please update the package accordingly. (FWIW, a simple rebuild will also let the package actually do the menu transition...)
