This no longer happens with hplip (on testing). However, the same symptom affects flashplugin-nonfree. The console messages are different though:
sh: 72: Syntax error: EOF in backquote substitution ReportbugNG WARNING Grr! Calling the MUA failed. Status and output was: 512, . Length of the command is: 2866 sh: 74: Syntax error: EOF in backquote substitution ReportbugNG ERROR Calling the MUA a second time with an even shorter message failed. Giving up.
Just like those described in #699169.
