I think I now know how to fix this bug. Upstream really wants Pillow as hard-coded dependencies (see setup.py). However to provide a possible wheezy backport where only python-imaging is provided, I'll trick the debian installer using:
$ cat debian/pydist-overrides pillow python-imaging This will work since jessie provides a virtual `python-imaging` package. Assuming I understand upstream correctly where python-imaging is enough.
