Thank you very much for your quick reply! Yes, the workaround you
provided does seem to work. :-)

However, it is not really ideal for 2 reasons:

1. It now requires me to add another file to the version control
database (asciidoc-dblatex.sty, which is now required for compiling the
document).

2. This is really unexpected behaviour: the listing blocks are accepted to be 
the thing to use for printing source code, so the expectation is that any 
strange characters would be printed verbatum. It is possible this is an 
unreasonable expectation. :-)

For the record, another workaround that I used before your reply was to
change the bash code to use the "$(...)" form instead of "`...`".
