Package: systemd-shim Version: 6-3 Severity: important systemd-shim is supposed to provide an environment where services from systemd, specifically timedated, localed, hostnamed and logind, are able to run without systemd being PID 1.
Starting with version 205, the cgroup handling was moved into systemd exclusively [1], i.e. logind no longer creates any cgroup hierarchies on its own but relies on org.freedesktop.systemd1 to create it. The current version of systemd-shim doesn't provide this functionality. As a result, the logind version from experimental, atm this is v208, is no longer able to run standalone, i.e. with a PID 1 != systemd. systemd-shim needs to be updated to provide that functionality. For a non-systemd environment this functionality is most likely to be provided by cgmanager [2]. systemd-shim will either have to utilise a service like cgmanager or implement this functionality itself. For the time being, as systemd-shim does no longer provide the environment to run systemd-logind standaolone, libpam-systemd will drop the alternative dependency on systemd-shim and will rely on systemd-sysv exclusively.
