We believe that the bug you reported is fixed in the latest version of
libjpeg8, which is due to be installed in the Debian FTP archive.

Confirmed.

libjpeg8 8d1-1 (currently in incoming.d.o) builds fine and produces
shared libraries on ppc64el.

        $ dpkg-deb -c libjpeg8_8d1-1_ppc64el.deb  | fgrep .so
-rw-r--r-- root/root 248512 2014-06-30 12:57 ./usr/lib/powerpc64le-linux-gnu/libjpeg.so.8.4.0 lrwxrwxrwx root/root 0 2014-06-30 12:57 ./usr/lib/powerpc64le-linux-gnu/libjpeg.so.8 -> libjpeg.so.8.4.0

Thanks,
