Currently there is no way to disconnect from a VPN with nm-applet. A connection can be initiated using the applet but once connected the applet still shows the VPN as OFF and if you click on it, a new connection is initiated. A workaround is to open the network settings and here the VPN does show as ON and here you can turn it OFF. This happens at least with OpenVPN, PPTP and VPNC.
