I ran strace on icedove and noticed that it was complaining about having
trouble finding libraries associated with the google talk plugin.
I uninstalled the googletalk package (Debian package made by google),
and it still crashed with the same message. I then looked in my mozilla
plugins directory and found some google talk plugins, presumably from an
older installation of google talk.
$ ls ~/.mozilla/plugins/
libnpasperaweb.so libnpgoogletalk.so libnpgtpo3dautoplugin.so libnpo1d.so
Deleting these google talk plugins [rm ~/.mozilla/plugins/libnpg*] made
both firefox and iceweasel work again.
... unfortunately I overwrote the "bad" strace with the strace from a
working icedove, and no longer have the precise version of the offending
plugin, so can't show the exact error that strace had produced that led
me to this fix.
