Hi:
In my humble opinion it's not debhelper that should look and point to the
right binutil binary tool name but rather the package which provide the cross
binutil tool(s).
Maybe this all could be simpler to study and address to the right place if
you expose an example of what you were trying to do and what do you expect.
I also agree with Joey that dealing with special cases is not really handy.
For instance: what if build system requires i486-linux-gnu-objcopy when cross
building?
