The preceding part of the sentence says [and a string starting with "nan" for NaN, in the case of f conversion], and I take the "*" to mean a wildcard pattern match, analogous with [a string starting with "nan" for NaN]. This is just my guess though.
Oh, that makes sense. Somehow it didn't occur to me that the "*" character is not meant to be literal here.
Could you make this character italic, to make it clear it is not literal?
