I did understand my mistake, namely I didn't precede the () by backslashes. Still, sed's answer is puzzling - could it be made more explicit (why does it talks about some \d where d is definitely not in what we asked ?) - would it be possible to add a simple explanatory message such as:
\n reference is undefined, did you use \( ?
