FWIW: the code has not changed at all in this area between 0.13.x and 0.14.x (and maybe even further back, quite easy to diff). That's not to say that the bug is not in xpra, just worth mentioning. We are aware of a problem with the systray with Debian distros running gnome-shell: http://xpra.org/trac/ticket/657 But with absolutely no idea of how to fix it. The system tray implementation in gnome-shell is already so close to unusable that figuring out breakage in such a setup is not going to be a high priority I am afraid.
