sadly the host and dig command lacks IDN support which is a standard since some years. $ host köthe.de Host köthe.de not found: 3(NXDOMAIN) Most of the tested clients work with IDN https://wiki.debian.org/IDN The feature is supported in bind and just needs to be enabled: /tmp/bind9-9.9.5.dfsg$ ./configure --help|grep idn --with-idn=MPREFIX enable IDN support using idnkit default PREFIX --with-idnlib=ARG specify libidnkit It would be great to get false error "not found" for IDN domains resolved.
