[CCing Vagrant Cascadian (Debian u-boot package maintainer)
and Ian Campbell (mainline u-boot sunxi platform custodian)]

U-Boot v2014.10 is scheduled to be released on Oct 13, 2014.
Vagrant is tracking the rc releases in experimental and the plan
is to get the final u-boot v2014.10 into unstable as soon as it
is released. That is a tight schedule, but I think it is
feasible.

The mainline u-boot version currently in jessie (2014.07+dfsg1-1)
has only very limited sunxi platform support. It works on the
Cubietruck, but does not support several other sunxi-based
systems for which we have support in d-i, so we are very
strongly interested in getting v2014.10 into Jessie.

D-i can also work with older u-boot-sunxi versions that are
supplied by some board vendors (flash-kernel takes explicit care
in the boot scripts it creates to handle this properly), but
those older versions do not have the full featureset that
mainline u-boot v2014.10 provides. The two major features
missing in the vendor-supplied versions are

- PSCI support, without which there is no SMP, i.e. the kernel
can only initalize the first CPU core

- AHCI support, i.e. booting from SATA harddisk is not possible.

So using old u-boot-sunxi versions instead of current mainline
is technically possible, but from a user point of view really
undesireable.

Regards,
Karsten
