I had this problem immediately after upgrading from Emacs 23 to Emacs
24. IIRC wiping the .newsrc files and starting over (resubscribing all
the mailboxes and such) clears it, hinting at an incompatibility between
the versions. I have another 23 -> 24 upgrade coming up soonish (when
jessie freezes or so) and should be able to verify this theory then.
