I get a quite unhelpful error message when server certificate verification fails: 

$ GET https://www.berlios.de/
Can't connect to www.berlios.de:443



Curiously enough, the problem goes away if I uninstall 
libio-socket-ip-perl:



IO::Socket::IP is now a core module, so this work-around no longer 
works. :-(
