when I downgraded to:

  amd64        mount removable devices as normal user
ii  udisks-glue                            1.3.5-1                              
  amd64        simple automount daemon with support for user-defined actions
ii  util-linux                             2.20.1-5.3                           
  amd64        Miscellaneous system utilities
ii  util-linux-locales                     2.20.1-5.11                          
  all          Locales files for util-linux

mount worked without requiring -t vfat and blkid detected the block device
shared as a USB mass storage device by the Nokia C5-00 handset.
