Minor "mea culpa" on this: while the main thrust of this report stands, don't get distracted by the specifics about Solarized and base02: I thought Gnome's choice of background colour was wrong because my editor was defaulting to a brighter (and incorrect) background colour, and I assumed the problem was with the Gnome scheme rather than with the editor's use of the Gnome palette.
