Package: thinkpad-source Version: 5.8-4 Severity: normal I used to use the instructions in the /usr/share/doc/thinkpad-source/README.Debian to install the thinkpad modules, but that didn't work at all with the 2.6.12 kernel (from the linux-image and linux-headers family of packages). I did find that the following did the trick, and seems to be the Right Thing these days:
$ m-a prepare $ m-a a-i thinkpad The a-i command built the .deb and then: Selecting previously deselected package thinkpad-modules-2.6.12-1-686. (Reading database ... 203212 files and directories currently installed.) Unpacking thinkpad-modules-2.6.12-1-686 (from .../thinkpad-modules-2.6.12-1-686_5.8-4+10.00.Custom_i386.deb) ... FATAL: Module smapi not found. FATAL: Module thinkpad not found. Despite the dire warnings, "modprobe thinkpad" worked fine, as did tpctl for the few things I do. It might be easier for new users if you could modify the README to suggest module-assistant. I'm not a kernel builder and I've certainly found it to be more reliable than the other methods for building modules. As always, thanks very much for maintaining this package. -- System Information: Debian Release: testing/unstable APT prefers testing APT policy: (600, 'testing'), (80, 'unstable') Architecture: i386 (i686) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Kernel: Linux 2.6.12-1-686 Locale: LANG=en_US, LC_CTYPE=en_US (charmap=ISO-8859-1) (ignored: LC_ALL set to en_US) Versions of packages thinkpad-source depends on: ii debhelper 4.9.13 helper programs for debian/rules ii devscripts 2.9.8 Scripts to make the life of a Debi ii gcc [c-compiler] 4:4.0.2-1 The GNU C compiler ii gcc-3.3 [c-compiler] 1:3.3.6-9 The GNU C compiler ii gcc-3.4 [c-compiler] 3.4.4-9 The GNU C compiler ii gcc-4.0 [c-compiler] 4.0.2-2 The GNU C compiler ii make 3.80-11 The GNU version of the "make" util Versions of packages thinkpad-source recommends: ii dpkg-dev 1.13.11 package building tools for Debian ii kernel-package 9.008.4 A utility for building Linux kerne -- no debconf information -- Bill Wohler <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> http://www.newt.com/wohler/ GnuPG ID:610BD9AD Maintainer of comp.mail.mh FAQ and MH-E.
