Another reason why the separation of cameras into their own group is 
needless is that many cameras can be mounted as USB mass storage devices. 
Regular USB mass storage devices are read/writable for users in the plugdev 
group when using hal/dbus (as both GNOME and KDE do). So the privilege 
separation of the camera from the plugdev group won't even matter for a 
large number of cameras.

For these reasons, please consider switching libgphoto2 to using the plugdev 
group like Ubuntu. This will simplify setup for users (since plugdev is a 
default group to which users are added by the installer) and make Debian 
easier to use.

BTW, the latest upload now works great with a recent kernel and udev, though 
the /etc/udev files still linger on purge.
