Hi,

that's an interesting guess but you figured it wrong. Ed (actually red)
is used to patch the index files following the pdiff mechanism.

That said, I was never really happy with the current solution. I will
have a look at how to implement it internally, or maybe using the apt
library if I can get access to it without restrictions.
