Are you running systemd as PID 1 while doing the upgrade? Which version of systemd did you have installed? Can you provide a journal log (ideally, boot with systemd.log_level=debug) when doing the dist-upgrade -- Why is it that all of the instruments seeking intelligent life in the universe are pointed away from Earth?
