You're right, something's fishy here. I was well aware of another
installation I installed under /opt, but that was the latest version.

Good news is that "/usr/bin/youtube-dl --version" returns "2015.01.16" so
everything's OK with the packaging. Sorry for the false alarm.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction, now I wish I knew how come I
have this /usr/local/bin/youtube-dl on my system, that's so old. "dpkg -S
$(which youtube-dl)" returns "dpkg-query: no path found matching pattern
/usr/local/bin/youtube-dl" BTW.
