When I put a new HBA in my machine, the device name order changed, for example, sdb became sdd and vice versa The smartctl commands (I set scterc in /etc/rc.local) and the smartd.conf file expect specific device names but it may be better to provide a way to reference the devices by some other criteria, e.g. all devices where the manufacturer name or serial match some regular expression.
