Given the time since the last update, and the number of upstream versions that have been released in that time, I think it's reasonable to ask if the Debian package is still maintained ? If it isn't then we can stop waiting for updates (and grab the upstream version) and/or perhaps look for someone else prepared to do it. But if the package is still maintained then I'd prefer to keep the system using packaged software (for the benefit of whoever has to look after it after me).
