standard system
less in testing has Priority: important and should be included in all
new installs. In Debian 7, it had only Priority: standard and would only
be installed if you did not uncheck "standard system" (or similar) in
the installer.

You are right. less have also the priority important in unstable. So one
way or another I must have removed it from my system.
