Just got confirmation from an upstream author (see last mail, github link) that this is a known bug in cinnamon 2.2:
"You're still on Cinnamon 2.2 it looks like - this particular freeze has been fixed in 2.4. [...] Unfortunately, the fixes are not things we can backport (we completely updated cjs to a newer upstream, and refactored Cinnamon as well)" What I didn't mention before: This bug freezes my complete desktop, partly it can not even be recovered by doing a 'killall -HUP cinnamon'.
