I just thought this information might give some more help in sorting out the bug.
I too was facing the same problem for months but didn't bother to look much deeper because we do have competitive alternatives to xmms now. I prefer xmms upon others for one primary reason, the xmms-volnorm plugin. I hope the other users also use this killer plugin. If you disable this plugin and then use the combination of xmms + artsd, it works absolutely fine.
