I will pass this upstream.

I suspect that your suggestion on using inotify2 is inappropriate, as 
(if I understand things correctly) that would mean bypassing the IMAP 
protocol and require mail storage and web service being on same host: 
Use of inotify2 would, as I understand it, be an internal matter for 
Dovecot to use - and then use the IMAP protocol to signal need for the 
webmail client to wake up and fetch newly appeared content.

But as said, I will forward both the issue and your ideas upstream.
