Could you please tell us: What do you mean exactly by "break". What broke exactly? VTs are _only_ the ones you get in text console (switching with ctrl-alt-Fn), you probably mean pseudoterminals, which are the ones you connect to with xterm, ssh and the like. Do you see this line in the output of mount: devpts on /dev/pts type devpts (rw,gid=5,mode=620) ? Did you let your kernel mount devfs from the very beginning by use of the devfs=mount kernel option as suggested in the README? What did you exactly change in /etc/default/devfsd conf?
