Indeed upgrading inkscape to 0.43 did the trick. 

I did not realize I had not upgraded that package to sarge. 

Should not the reportbug program tell me a newer version is availaible?
Since it does check appartently...

I can't reproduce this bug here with the new version of inkscape, 0.43.
It's interesting that you have the version from sarge installed and your
APT prefers unstable. Can you please test with the new version? Apart
from bugs in inkscape this can also be caused by the incompatibility of
library versions.
