I was able to get the directory contents to show by changing the view to
icons. Even when changed back to Compact list, the files are there. In
~/.xsession-errors, there are some repetitions of "(thunar:1263):
GLib-GObject-WARNING **: invalid unclassed pointer in cast to
'ThunarTreeView'".
