What doesn't go away exactly?  (What do you mean by “interface
configuration”?)  I wonder if ip(8) could help, by the way.  It's
included in the initrd, can flush routes (‘ip addr flush dev $DEVICE’)
and bring down interfaces (‘ip link set dev $DEVICE down’).
