Actually GNOME was the original reason for shipping the desktop files. The xscreensaver daemon and configuration tools do not use the desktop files. They were only shipped so that people could use the hacks in xscreensaver-data/gl packages with gnome-screensaver. How this works in GNOME land today, I don't know.
