Once you have sbuild installed and a sid chroot configured, it can be reproduced with sbuild -A -d sid xemacs21-packages_2009.02.17.dfsg.2-2 Full build log attached. I'm downgrading this after having verified that it's only an issue with sbuild. Given the log it seems quite likely that the hang is triggered by $HOME being unwritable (by design) when run in sbuild.
