please check for errors in the communication log while following
https://wiki.debian.org/Icedove#Debugging_Icedove_Activity

Please note also the information in /usr/share/doc/icedove/README.Debian

This sounds like the mails server is using a authentification method
Icedove isn't accepting anymore with the shipped defaults. Please note
the tip above.

The scurity settings in further versions will become more strict so it's
time to fix the server config I think.
