Interesting. Yes, setting Standard Input=null/Output=syslog/Error=syslog
works for me with sane-utils 1.0.24-13 and systemd 224-1.

I think part of my earlier confusion was because I hadn't realised saned
(now) has native systemd socket-activation support, and didn't need to be
run in inetd-compatiblity mode (Input=socket/Output=socket) (verified by
reading the saned code).   The inetd-compat mode also works for me, but of
course the native support is more robust to drivers that incorrectly write
debugging to stdout.

I discovered along the way that Input=socket/Output=syslog makes saned
produce log messages that look like the connection comes from localhost
rather than real client IP (ie: I guess it is using getpeername on stdout,
not stdin), and presumably this combination also fails when saned tries to
communicate with the client using this incorrect stdout.  Given the
confusion in some of the discussions, I wonder if some people have also
been trying this incorrect combination.
