Uhhm, you're right. What I'd done was:

sudo aptitude update
sudo aptitude upgrade

and left it installing, unattended.

After hitting the problem, I downgraded everything and, after your email, 
upgraded again.  There was an error unpacking xlibs-data, but I couldn't 
capture it: something to do with not being able to unpack a file because it 
also belonged to package xlibs. Here's the weird thing:

grep xlibs-data /var/log/aptitude | tail -1

[UPGRADE] xlibs-data 6.8.2.dfsg.1-11 -> 6.9.0.dfsg.1-1

dpkg -l xlibs-data

ii  xlibs-data     6.8.2.dfsg.1-11 X Window System client data

I guess the bug stands then.
